ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY
BIODESIGN INSTITUTE

CHALLENGE: THIS UNIVERSITY AND GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION WERE NOT TOP-OF-MIND WHEN RESEARCHERS AND FUNDERS WERE PROMPTED TO THINK ABOUT LEADERS IN CUTTING-EDGE DISCOVERIES.

Headline: You wouldn't expect a cutting edge research center to be here either. Copy: Scientists teaming in collaboration. A culture that accepts chance of failure. World class facilities and intellectual infrastructure in the Sonoran Desert. Weird, huh? Logo/tag: ASU Biodesign Institute. The Official Home of "Why Not?"
Headline: We believe, if we put our minds to it, anything's possible.
Copy: We're aiming to completely eradicate cancer, film the wonder of photosynthesis to aid in the discovery of clean energy, and keep all of us safe from chemical or biological agents released in the environment.
Big challenges, indeed. That's exactly why we're attacking them.

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL & RESEARCH CENTER OAKLAND

CHALLENGE: PARENTS LIVING OUTSIDE OF THE CITY OF OAKLAND ARE LESS LIKELY TO SEEK CARE HERE FOR THEIR KIDS, EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE ONLY 100%-FOCUSED PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL IN THE REGION .

Tagline: Undivided attention. Unsurpassed care.
Headline: An unwavering focus on kids.
Copy: When all you do is help kids get better, something wonderful happens: they make you better. Because our doctors, nurses and other specialists work exclusively with kids every day, they see the subtle things others could miss. They find where it hurts when a child is too young to tell them. And they know it takes more than advanced pediatric medicine to speed a child's recovery. It takes an entire organization focused on all of a child's needs, including the need to simply be a child. That's why, along with some of the world's most sophisticated treatment and technology, you'll also see a therapist working with kids at their bedsides. A pediatric anesthesi-ologist using toys to relax a 3-year old before surgery. And an endless array of other comforts for children, not just because we love them, but also because we understand the science behind giving them a sense of well-being. We can do all this because we are the only independent children's hospital in Northern California. That means all of our resources are focused on kids, and only kids. It's why so many children get better here. And why you would want to ensure your child has access to this level of care, should it ever be needed. For more information, or to find one of our doctors, visit www.childrenshospitaloakland.org Logo/tag: Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland. Institute.
Undivided Attention. Unsurpassed care.
Headline: One of only four ferritomiter diagnostic machines in the world. The only non-profit cord blood bank in the United States. The only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in the Bay Area. And perhaps the only PICU chief that wears this many hats.
Copy: Because we're Northern California's only independent children's hospital, words like "only", "first" and leading tend to crop up a bit. But while distinction has never been our focus - children are - it does serve to remind all that our doctors, researchers and staff are doing amazing things for the children in our care, as well as for generations of children to come. Here, the first cure for alpha thalassemia major was delivered. Our cardiac program, Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units consistently deliver some of the highest success rates in the nation. We attribute these accomplishments to an extraordinarily dedicated staff. But we must also give a nod to the fact that we are able to practice medicine and pursue knowledge unencumbered by competing interests. This independence allows us to focus on clinical excellence, the emotional needs of children in treatment, and of course, which hat we think will get the most smile on a given day. www.childrenshospitaloakland.orgLogo/tag: Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland. NO TO MEASURE K (LOCAL BALLOT INITIATIVE)

CHALLENGE: MEASURE K IS SPONSORED BY A FRIENDLY-SOUNDING COMPANY CLAIMING LOCAL PRESENCE - ALERT VOTERS THAT THE MEASURE AND ITS BACKERS ARE NOT AS THEY APPEAR.

Strategy: Create a story in the style of a fable, suitable for ads, posters, social media and direct mail.
Copy: Once upon a time, in quiet Sausalito, a cute little otter arrived with Cannibis Storefront Plans, and, after a while, made friends with some townspeople. Then, when his Plans, took a little while with the City, the otter, he turned sad. And mad. The otter schemed. He got lawyers (they sued the City! And they sued a competing Cannabis measure!) and concocted a fuzzy 14-page ballot measure. He fooled citizens to gather signatures to get Measure K on the ballot. Alas, the fuzzy Measure K was not what many had hoped. It was monopolistic. An frighteningly, the City and townspeople would be unable to regulate anything, anything at all, about the business. Oh no! Turns out the otter was a shark all along! So the wise people of Sausalito voted No To Measure K, sent the shark back to where he came from, and together they went about making a better plan for their town. Measure K is not OK for Sausalito. Otter Brands, LLC wrote Measure K to dictate our cannabis retail policy to suit them. Vote No so we can craft the right policy for our town. Go to votenotok.org for the whole story.
